Im keeping an eye on the Transaction log for a database that I am cleaning up. There is a 3rd party tool that is supposedly doing Transaction log backups. However, I have been tracking the file space for this database over the last few months and the free space for the log has gradually been declining. When a Tlog backup is done, wont this reclaim the space?
However, after reading up a bit on this, there are factors that can prevent the log space from being reclaimed...

What the heck will hang around in a log file after months of use, to the point of STILL taking up 20-50 MB of a 3 GB Log file?
