Different Performance Between "Intel Xeon X" series and "Intel Xeon E5" series

Hi all,

We have many servers in our company, most of them are ProLiant G7 and G8.

On G7 series, Intel Xeon X5680 3.3GHz processors are installed and on G8, Intel Xeon E5-2690 2.9GHz processors are installed.

The disk and memory specs are almost identical on these servers. All of SQL Servers are 2012 Ent SP1 CU6.

We recently noticed that queries on G7 series run 2 times faster than G8s.

For the test purpose, I backed up particular db and restored on many of these servers. I benchmarked the same query on them. G7 series finish the query in 5 seconds while G8 series finish in 12 seconds!

I played with sp_configure and "max degree of parallelism" but could not achieve better result on G8s.

Also the exec plan is a bit different between two series of servers.

My question is that, what is the root of this different performance and G7s and G8s??

Because the disk and memory are same for them, my guess is about the processors but I'm not sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Leila
