Named instances and the Browser Service with Failover Clustering

Afternoon All,

I am currently working with a SQL 2008 cluster and am having a nightmare with failover clustering and the browser service. I am hoping someone can help me out as I have managed to confuse myself!

I have a named instance installed as it's own Resource Group within Failover Cluster Manager. It has a dedicated IP, Luns and was originally installed to use a dynamic port on 57706. This worked fine and I was able to failover between nodes.

Due to security issues, the browser service is blocked, so I needed to change the dynamic port to TCP Port 1433. Once I changed this, I restarted the services the resource fails within cluster manager. I am able to start the service manually and connect using Management Studio using NETWORKNAME\INSTANCENAME,1433 for a limited time, but it then stops the service.

When I check ERROR.log, there are no errors. The only errors I can see are in cluster.log:

0000182c.00001804::2013/07/03-09:23:08.330 ERR [RES] SQL Server <SQL Server (SQL03)>: [sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = 08001; native error = ffffffff; message = [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF].

Changing the port back to a dynamic port also fails.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Paul
