An error 1069 - )The service did not start due to logon failure) occurred while performing this service operation ...

Hi All,

We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.

Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.

We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.

Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!

Error:

An error 1069 - )The service did not start due to logon failure) occurred while performing this service operation on the SQLServerAgent service.

Regards,

Joseph

Dear all,

Primary platform: SQL Server 2014 SP1. We've got Always On with two listeners for Always On and another listener for the global cluster (FCI)

Does aynone has any clue about that?

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "

Dear all,

Source: SQL Server 2014

Destination: SQL Server 2008

Every time I go to the linked server XXXXX I get this dialog:

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "XXXXX"

If I try this, the same:

sp_testlinkedserver N'XXXXX'

Nonetheless and it is very surprising (how odd!!!!!) If I go at first on Properties Tab and then, close, it works.. even If you disconnected the source from SSMS->Object Explorer and reopen again.

Any hints or advises on that wouldb be greatly appreciated!!

backup fails (sector size)

Dear all,

I am trying to perform a backup by hand in my localbox SQL2k14:

Cannot use the backup file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.xxx\MSSQL\Backup\zxxzz.bak'
because it was originally formatted with sector size 4096 and is now on a device with sector size 512.

is there some workaround with that?

As per my understanding applying BLOCKSIZE clause in the BACKUP T-SQL statement amends that but it does not work

FSTUTIL informs me that my disk (where I want to do the backup) has 512

Setting up permissions for developer

Id like to keep things fairly simple for a new developer by using roles.  They need to:
- SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE
- CREATE TABLE, PROCEDURE, FUNCTION, VIEW etc

Im thinking that these roles will suffice, when Im mapping their login to the database(s) they need to access.
db_datareader,  db_datawriter, db_ddladmin

This should get the ability to create & update just about any object they will be working on, as well as select and update data,  correct?

Seems to be the case.

Am I missing something?

Is it different in SQL 2016?

ps - it does appear in the list for database/task/scripting, so it can be scripted, which is what I was after.

Why do I have CXPackets when running maxdop=1?

$

I've continued to do some research on our current system.

We're running maxdop=1 on four cores in a VM environment, officially it's OLTP but we run some batch processing too so it's probably a mixed workload.

99% of that workload uses the default maxdop, I'm the only one in the shop who would ever override it, and I've done so only in one or two SPs - though they are some that are frequently used.

I've now found that in some very short periods down to five seconds, as well as over longer periods of an hour or two, our leading wait can be CXPacket, and especially in the shorter periods the total wait time can be greater than the elapsed time, and the average wait time can approach or even exceed 4ms.

This would appear to be some form of CPU pressure and yet our cumulative CPU counters never seem to jump above about 70%, I haven't tried to watch individual ones - I guess with maxdop=1 if three of them were maxed at 100% that would look like 75% cumulative, wouldn't it?  Hmm.  Off I go to play with perfmon!

The other possibility is that these rather nasty CXPackets come from just the couple of cases where I did force maxdop>1, even though in those cases the maxdop>1 seemed to really help, I guess that still leaves some room.  Or, could it be a sign that the maxdop>1 tasks are blocked/waiting because too many maxdop=1 tasks are already running?

Any further interpretations and advice welcome.

Josh

Just copying full backup of database on a nightly basis

Dear Experts,

Our requirement is only to copy the full backup of a database on to a DR server on a nightly basis. No need to restore or anything.

Is there any script which can be used to accomplish this. Primary and Secondary server are SQL Server 2008 R2.

Please note, those nightly full backups would have a new time stamp daily. Please share any scripts you may have.

Restoring database on to a new server using sufficient security

$

Dear Experts,

This is for one of our clients which has a secure database in their network. Now, we are planning to migrate that database on to our managed server. This is SQL Server 2008 Enterprise. This database is not enabled for TDE.

1) Once it is restored on our managed server, we will enable it for TDE

Their concern is when the backup file is copied on to our network first time it is not protected. How can we accomplish this backup file to be protected when it is copied to our network. At a basic level, we can passport protect the file in SQL Server 2008.

Please share your ideas?

DMV and DMV: do they bring metadata?

Hi there,

I am working with a WPF application where I'll be using these views and functions. Because of the huge amount of fields it would be great to show the end-users that will use this application will understand the meaning or the purpose of the information (dashboards)

Let me illustrate what I am trying to explain:

select
SC.client_net_address as IP_AOS,
SC.local_net_address as IP_SQL,
SC.client_tcp_port,
SC.last_write,
SC.last_read,
SP.hostname,
SP.login_time,
SP.last_batch,
SP.program_name,
SP.loginame,
SP.net_library,
(SELECT [text] FROM fn_get_sql(sql_handle))  as 'Last t-sql statement used by the connection'
from sys.sysprocesses SP
LEFT join sys.dm_exec_connections SC
on SP.spid = SC.session_id
where SP.spid > 50 and SP.hostname like '%AOS%'
order by sp.login_time desc

The most of these columns are intuitive. But you can find dozens of them cryptic.

If you go to the BOL for each object you can get the full description for each column, e.g, sys.sysprocesses

Hi Everyone,

Greetings of the day.

I have a production job which runs on daily basis to backup, restore and rename the database. In recently, some times at restore database  and rename database steps job failing with below reason “Only user processes can be killed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 6107).  NOTE: The step was retried the requested number of times (3) without succeeding.  The step failed”, after verifying sp_who2 at run time I came to know that a task running with command “GHOST CLEANUP”. Database size around 2TB. Now my requirement is to check the job/script to if “GHOST CLEANUP” running or not? if running step should wait till Ghost Cleanup to complete and start next step/statement (restore database and rename database steps). I hope my question is clear. Please help on this. I’ve below script for basic check,

SELECT  spid,

        sp.[status],

        loginame [Login],

memory tables and cpu usage

$

Here's another question as I get into the use of memory tables. I haven't seen any mention of this.  If we put a significant portion of our database into memory tables, is this going to increase our use of CPU?

From a few preliminary tests it looks like CPU usage can be noticeably higher when using CPU tables compared to using regular tableswhich already have data in memory.

So, say you have a 100gb database, and you put 25% of it into memory-optimized tables, and this table, overall, accounts for a lot of your database activity or you'd hardly bother to put it in memory.  Let's say it normally associates in some way with about 50% of CPU activity.  If the increase to use memory tables is even 50%, then total CPU utilization may go up 25%.  I think that's worth a mention in planning guides.

OTOH these are very rough estimates with a strong assumption about data already in memory.  It may be that even with your main data tables in memory, still 75% of CPU activity is related either to tempdb or to system processes.  Then a 25% increase in *user* activity may be a smaller net increase in overall CPU usage.

Of course I'd love to hear from anyone who has done this.  I don't seem to have a server handy where I can just load it all up to see what there is to see.  Have to work on that I guess.

Josh

ps - which immediately leads one to ask about putting tempdb into memory tables but surely that's another topic. :)

pps: yes, memory table vars!
